No community colleges in our survey reported plans for implementing a “My Library” service within the next year. Community colleges also reported the lowest percentage of a “My Library” website features already implemented. Around 14% of mid-sized colleges according to their FTE enrollment currently offer a “My Library” service to their students while 23% of colleges with over 12,000 students reported to that they planned to implement such a website within the next year.
Public colleges reported 9 times the weekly visitors of private colleges; the public colleges in the sample were substantially larger in FTE terms than the private colleges. The number of unique weekly visitors generally increased as FTE enrollment went up. Sixty-two survey participants gave us data on the top five visited library web pages based on the number of unique visitors. The most commonly visited page was the library home page, which appeared 41 times on the list, 38 of which were at number one.
Community colleges were least likely to have hired outside consultants to advise on the library website. 5% of whom reported that the college administration footed the bill. 5% of four-year/MA granting institutions hired consultants for the library website. 67% of research universities reported hiring consultants at all. In both cases, the library and not the college administration, paid for it. 33% reporting that the college administration had paid. Public colleges matched the private colleges when the library paid, but not when paid through the college administration.
