Conclusion The last 20 years has seen a significant change in the way that the disposal of dredgings has been regulated in the UK; from no control prior to 1988, to the current situation where complex legislation is in place. The implementation of this legislation has caused significant difficulties for those involved in the disposal of dredgings from inland waterways, mainly because it is biased towards the operation of commercial landfill.

The continued disposal of material and the associated volumes of saline water are an essential part of 38 MAINTENANCE DREDGING II maintaining the site. Volumes disposed of have varied between 75,000 and 200,000 m3 annually in recent years.
